Do You #BrlChat? You should!
#BrlChat is a Twitter chat for Teachers of the Visually Impaired (TVI) and others interested in the education of blind students. During the 2013-14 school year, #BrlChat will be held on the third Wednesday of each month at 9 p.m. eastern. The topic of discussion for each conversation is voted on by participants. – Description from Without A Classroom
Last week I happened to be on Twitter and got a chance to jump in on #BrlChat for a discussion on working with students who are Deafblind. I didn’t have much to add, but I sure learned a lot. Sometimes it is just really interesting to hear about the resources and theory behind teaching. Of course, it’s also nice to learn from educators who are so invested in their students. I did get to share the blog A Mother’s Musings that is written by a Deaf mom about raising her children, one of whom is Deafblind. They loved that blog suggestion so at least I contributed something!
The #BrlChat discussion turned to experience books which is a topic of interest to me. Tom is super into books right now. I think he would love to be the star of his own experience books. He has an incredible memory and I think he would really respond to a book targeted to him. For example, when he goes to the park he still mentions a child by name that we met and played with there last summer. We only met this kid one time and he still remembers! It also makes me sort of sad that Tom has so few kids in his life (besides at school) that one interaction with a kid at a park left such an impression on him. Our new neighborhood has more kids so I’m hoping there will be more opportunity for interacting with kids his age there.
I could make an experience book about him going to the park or an experience book about summer (possibly all seasons.) Tom absolutely loves shopping so I could easily make an experience book about shopping. That’s why I included the picture of Tommy wearing a hat. We were shopping last week and he had a great time trying on hats.
So join us for the next #BrlChat:
May 21st: Cross Cultural Education and Communication with Families.
June 18th: Experience Books (Tips, Tricks, and Resources)

Last chance for the survey!
My dear friend is finishing up a masters program in public health and she asked me if I would allow her to survey Thomas Marshall Does It All readers. She is studying why people follow informal health blogs for her masters project at Wayne State University. This is an anonymous survey that involves nine quick questions via survey monkey. Thank you so much!
